100K for the IMNDA

Press Release

27th October 2011

100K for the IMNDA

Local Tuam Man to complete 100K run for Motor Neurone Disease

Galway man Darren McGough is to complete over 100k on Monday 31st of October when he crosses the finish line of the Dublin City Marathon. The first leg of Darren’s 100k started with the Streets of Galway 8K, the Longford Marathon (43K), and the Galway Bay Half marathon (21.5K)

Darren, who lives in Sligo, is carrying out this mammoth challenge in aid of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA) as his father Michael McGough was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease last year. Speaking ahead of the run Darren said;

“I couldn't have done this without my parents. I have the best motivation in the world to complete my task. They have supported me every step of the way and I am hugely grateful for that. Throughout my life I have never wanted for anything and this is the least that I can do to help repay everything they have done for me. They are two of the most loving, hard working, courageous and strong individuals and are such a great example for me.”

Darren started training last November running three or four kilometers and building up gradually. His aim is not only to complete the Dublin Marathon in under four and half hours but to raise as much awareness and money as possible. He has so far collected almost €1,600 but hopes to get over €2,000. If you wish to donate, you can do so at www.mycharity.ie/events/darrensrun. You can also donate to Darren personally at Lifestyle Sports or the Mezzanine Cafe in the Quayside shopping centre in Sligo.

Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a progressive neurological condition that leaves people unable to do the everyday things the rest of us take for granted. Walking, talking and swallowing may become virtually impossible. MND strikes people across all ages and there is currently no known cure.

The IMNDA is dedicated to providing care for people with MND, their carers and families such as specialised equipment on loan, home visiting by our MND Nurse Specialist and financial assistance towards home help. The IMNDA is a small organisation and relies heavily on fundraising for over 75% of its income to continue providing vital services to the entire country.
