Climbing Kilimanjaro
We did the climb in memory of my dad, Barth, who died of motor
neurone in August 2003.
The climb up and down took seven days (19,340 feet). Over all it was tougher than I thought it would be. The last day of the climb we started our journey at 12 midnight.
It took us 6.5hrs to make it to the summit, just in time to see the sun rise. On the way up it was a bit scary as we passed people who had just collapsed or who were vomiting due to the extreme high altitude. I felt a bit unsteady for about 30 minutes of the climb and Laura got some pains in her chest, but luckily nothing came of it. We didn't stay too long on the top as it was freezing (the batteries in my head torch and one of our camera's froze). Once we completed the climb we had a great sense of achievement and I was a bit emotional. Laura did say she "wouldn't wish the climb on her worst enemy".
The scenery was incredible. We passed Kili by plane a week later and couldn't believe how close it looked to the plane.
