General Election - An important message for our clients

You will no doubt have many election candidates knocking on your door in the coming weeks and seeking your support to get them elected. As your association, we thought it would be timely to draw attention to some key matters relevant to the association and your welfare which you or your family may want to address to canvassers hoping to be in the new Government. These include:

• We believe that all people diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease should automatically be entitled to a medical card, and not means-tested as at present.
• We provide primary medical care to patients and in 2010 we spent €880,000 directly on Home Help, Patient care, Nursing support and provision of Medical Aids, Equipment and Assistive appliances to more than 270 clients throughout Ireland, who are coping with the disease
• Government funding to the Association is just under 25%, so we rely primarily on the generosity of the public and widespread fundraising in order to provide these key essential services to our patients and their families.
• We save the State significant health care costs by enabling clients to have specialist care at home, supported by their families.

Make your local representative commit to being a voice in Government for the Motor Neurone Disease community and to lobby for greater Government funding of the Association.
