Special grants are available to adapt houses for
people with disabilities. Work which might qualify includes the building
of an extra room, the provision of a downstairs bathroom or toilet, the
provision of ramps, widening of door openings etc.
The local authority decides if the proposed work is necessary. The
amount of the grant is the full cost of the work (up to a maximum of
€20320) in the case of a rented local authority house or flat or 90% of
the cost (up to a maximum of €20320) for private houses. Where the house
is less than 1 year old or where a new house is being built
specifically to meet the needs of the person with a disability, a grant
of up to €12700 is available.
