IMNDA Nursing Service
Dear member, family member and carers
Regretfully, the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association has had to reduce its nursing service. As of the 2nd July 2009, the nursing service provided by the IMNDA will be reduced to one full time nurse specialist.
During this time, nursing service provision will adhere to the following plan:
The nurse specialist will operate one day a week, where possible, as a vocal point of contact (email/phone) for clients/families and community health care workers as it will be impossible for her to schedule home visits to the entire community. Please use the Freefone 1800 403 403 number to avail of this service or to obtain other contact details.
The nurse specialist will use all opportunities to train community staff in your area; this is something you can discuss with your current multi-disciplinary team. Training of others would be of benefit in the long term ensuring there are more informed staff to deal with your queries. Again instruct your community team to contact the Freefone 1800 403 403 for information.
The nurse specialist will also be available to liaise with hospital professionals so that patient care is delegated to others as much as possible, instruct your professionals to use the Freefone number 1800 403 403.
With regard to home visits, the IMNDA will refer to prioritisation guidelines to schedule home visits.
Urgent - visit within 3 days: acutely and terminally ill patients who want to be cared for at home; visits that can prevent a hospital admission
or a visit to an A & E Dept, e.g. blocked catheters, patients in need of intensive nursing care.
Non-urgent - Access within 5 days: patients in need of curative care e.g. acute and chronic wound management, post-operative patients, medications.
Routine - Access at a convenient time: health checks, support visits, bereavement visits, and other assessments.
Meanwhile, it is our intention and priority to continue to improve and expand our services and the nursing service will take precedence when discussing service provision in the future.
