What is Palliative Care?

Palliative care involves the total care of patients and their families at the stage in a serious illness where the focus has changed from curing the illness to ensuring quality of life. It relates to the treatment of patients who are not expected to recover from their condition.

The aim of palliative care is to offer the highest quality of life possible to patients. It involves dealing with the physical, psychological, social and also spiritual needs of a patient.

Patients and their families are treated by a large team of health professionals who specialise in caring for patients who no longer respond to treatment for their illness.

How to avail of Palliative Care services

Hospice patients are referred through their family doctor (GP) or on admission to a hospital, for palliative care services.

Irish Association for Palliative Care

The Irish Association for Palliative Care was established in 1993 to promote the development of palliative care throughout the island of Ireland. 

The aim of the Irish Association for Palliative Care is to promote palliative care in Ireland and to act as a focus for all those who work or have an interest in the field of palliative care.  The objective of the organisation is to promote education and research in palliative care.

Irish Hospice Foundation

The Irish Hospice Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation that promotes the hospice philosophy and supports the development of hospice/palliative care.
