Special grants are available to adapt houses for people with disabilities. Work which might qualify includes the building of an extra room, the provision of a downstairs bathroom or toilet, the provision of ramps, widening of door openings etc.
The local authority decides if the proposed work is necessary. The amount of the grant is the full cost of the work (up to a maximum of €20320) in the case of a rented local authority house or flat or 90% of the cost (up to a maximum of €20320) for private houses. Where the house is less than 1 year old or where a new house is being built specifically to meet the needs of the person with a disability, a grant of up to €12700 is available.
Apply to your local authority.
