Wicklow Marilyn Munro Walkers top Wicklow Summits in One Day

Press Release

Wicklow Marilyn Munro Walkers top Wicklow Summits in One Day

Over €6,000 raised for Motor Neurone Disease

Over 80 hikers from across the Wicklow area gathered together on Sunday 4th of December with one aim – to get to the summit of every Marilyn and the one Munro in all of Wicklow in one day and raise much needed funds and awareness for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA).

A Marilyn is a mountain or hill with a relative height of at least 150 metres (492 ft.), regardless of absolute height or other merit. A Munro is a mountain with a height over 914.4 m (3,000 ft). There are 27 Marilyns and one Munro (Lugnaquilla) within or on the Wicklow county border.

Event organisers, Gerry Walker and Margaret Barron, organised the fundraiser along with the Wicklow walking group the Wayfarers, in support of their longtime friends Peter McIntyre and his wife Emily Meade. Peter McIntyre has been living with MND for the last two years.

The Wicklow Marilyn Munro event was a great success and saw small groups of two/three hillwalkers reach the summit of each of these peaks at 2:30PM on Sunday 4th December and over €6,000 was raised for the IMNDA along the way. For more information on the climbers and the event or to arrange an interview please contact Gerry on 01 4947603/ 087 7686518 or email

Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is an incurable neurological condition leaving people unable to do the everyday things the rest of us take for granted, like walking, talking and swallowing which may become virtually impossible. One person dies every five days from MND.

The Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA) is dedicated to providing care for people with Motor Neurone Disease, their carers and families as well as supporting research into the causes and treatments of MND.

The IMNDA is a small organisation that relies heavily on fundraising in order to continue providing vital services to the MND community; such as assistance towards home help, provision of specialised equipment on loan and home visiting by an MND Nurse Specialist.
