The Mardyke Walking Football Group organised a 6-hour walking football marathon in the Mardyke Sports Grounds on 25th July in aid of Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA). The event united colleagues, friends and supporters from across UCC and beyond, helping to raise €10,700 for IMNDA.
Tomás Tyner, UCC photographer until 2023, is one of the founding members of the Mardyke Walking Football Group and has remained a strong friend & supporter of the group. Tomás has been battling motor neurone disease (MND) since late 2023 with courage and good humour.
Some of the supporters on the day included broadcaster and former IMNDA Chairperson, Jonathan Healy, who officially started the marathon, former Cork City FC player Alan Bennett, former members of the Irish women's international football team and Tomás's wife, Mary Tyner. UCC colleagues who took part in the day included Christine O'Donovan, Neil Nash, Dermot O Sullivan, Kilian Murphy, Michael Morris, Aodh Quinlivan, Emma Martin, Kevin Condon and Frank O Donovan.
Well done to everyone who took part, donated, and supported the event. Special thanks to Mardyke's Fresco Café for sponsoring teas, coffees, and sandwiches for all participants on the day. Raising over €10,000 for IMNDA is a fantastic achievement
