Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a form of psychological therapy that aims to help people live their lives in ways that are important and meaningful to them, alongside whatever difficulties they might be experiencing that are outside of their control (such as MND). We recently showed in a large clinical trial that ACT, adapted for the needs of people living with MND, can help people to manage their quality of life and mood.
Traditional psychological therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy are focused on helping people to change their distressing thoughts and feelings. ACT differs from these type of therapies as it aims to help people relate to their distressing thoughts and feelings in a different way, in order that they can do what they want to do or be the type of person they want to be alongside MND, rather than trying to change the thoughts and feelings themselves. ACT achieves this using a variety of experiential exercises and metaphors.
