My friend Ros's MND Jouney

It can start with a few stumbles, a bit of tripping over and feeling out of breath. But surely nothing to worry about, I was just getting old, needed to take better care of myself. So, off to the gym, take it nice and steady. Suddenly 4 minutes of cardio and I’m done. I go on the floor to do stretches, and I can barely get up. I start to struggle with my grasp and picking things up. My left foot starts to drag as I walk. I go to a conference and I struggle to walk up the stairs. And I’m getting so, so tired. Needing to sleep for 2 hours when I get home, then taking more and more days off because I’m already too fatigued in the morning.

I get the appointment for the neurologist. A number of blood tests, MRIs and EMGs (electrodes inserted by needle to assess your neurones in legs and arms). The diagnosis was MND (Motor Neurone Disease) - they don’t know what causes it, and there is no cure or effective medication for it. It kills you - in months or in years. The disease is degenerative and kills you sometimes slowly, sometimes quickly - it’s different for each person. Over time you lose your independence and totally rely on others to get up, to sit down, to go to the toilet, to eat, to shower, to brush your teeth, to go out anywhere at all - eventually becoming reliant on a wheelchair. Your body just shuts down, robbing you of movement, speech and eventually breath.

Organisations like MND Ireland are massively important to help MND patients and their carers in living with this disease.

Walk While You Can for IMNDA this October!

Every day the most remarkable people face the toughest of battles and that’s why I’m walking while I can in support of people living with Motor Neurone Disease. Please help me reach my fundraising target or join me by walking 5km.

This autumn, it’s up to all of us to ensure that Walk While You Can continues to raise urgently needed funds for people living with MND. So not only are you helping to fund our nursing service, extra home care hours and critical equipment that's needed to keep people at home - you are also sending a powerful message of hope to every family affected by MND.

There are more than 470 people affected by this cruel and debilitating disease all across Ireland. The Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA) is the only organisation in this country supporting these families and it’s a charity that’s very close to my heart.

By walking or donating you will keep the amazing MND nurses in the communities where they are needed most.

Please support my fundraising efforts and help me ensure that every person living with MND receives the dedicated care and support they need.
