Other Supports

Psychosocial Support
Psychological support for people diagnosed with and living with MND is crucial for addressing the emotional and mental challenges that arise from being diagnosed with a life-limiting disease such as MND. Along with the tremendous support from the nursing team, the IMNDA fund professional counselling support for those with MND and their families.
Having immediate access to a qualified counsellor is essential for those who would otherwise be on a waiting list for months.
This fund also includes access to bereavement counselling. In 2024 there was €40,289 spent on counselling services, funded solely through donations and fundraising activities.

Recharge Grant
The IMNDA partnered with the SoHotel and iNUA Hotel Groups for our Recharge grant to provide memory-making breaks and carer breaks to those living with MND and their families, 98 families benefited from this in 2024 with an equivalent value of €48,641.

Travel Grant
This was introduced to assist with some of the expenses of traveling to medical appointments, 69 people received travel grants to the value of €15,350.

“People don’t realise until it happens to them that it’s the whole family that gets the diagnosis, not just the person. We all had to learn to cope and adapt to our new normal. It was very stressful but having access to a counsellor, thanks to IMNDA funding, really helped.”

Research

The IMNDA provides funding towards research on an annual basis. We fund scientific and medical research of the highest quality specific to MND. This research is conducted by Professor Orla Hardiman and her team in Trinity College. More information can be found here: www.mnd.ie

Information Service

The IMNDA operates a Freephone Helpline number - 1800 403 403 and this number is in operation Monday to Thursday from 9am – 5pm and Friday from 9am - 4pm.
