Walking While I Can for IMNDA this October 21st!

Almost there!!

Tomorrow, Saturday 21st at 10.30 am, is the walking day.

I have only words of gratitude for all the support shown and the kindness expressed by everyone.

This may not be the way I had planned things, but certainly knowing that Jen, the kids and I have such an amazing group of family, friends and colleagues, makes a world of difference; and provides strength, humour and energy to deal with whatever comes.

If you can't make it tomorrow, Please do not worry!!

If you can, wrap up and let's walk. It will be great to see you there.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, always!

---------------------------------------

Earlier this year, I was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). It was quite a shock since I have been always very active and I enjoyed cycling adventures, rock climbing, outdoors activities and running, a lot.

MND is a rare disease and there are still many unknowns about how it progresses, affecting every patient in different ways. In my case, it impacts my arms and my overall physical condition and so now brushing my teeth, typing on a keyboard, peeling an orange or tying my laces is quite complicated; and running a 5k is major achievement, whenever I can do it.

Yet I can still do these things, regardless of the complications, while others with the disease can’t.

The Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA) is the only organisation in Ireland that provides support and help in many ways to both, patients and their families, to help dealing with the consequences of a disease for which there is still no cure but, at least, treatment and care.

The IMNDA is hosting during October the Walk While You Can campaign. It is to raise awareness on both the disease but more importantly on their work, day by day, and to raise funds and be able to continue with their support.

So, while I can, I’ll keep walking and sometimes running, but on October 21st I will be doing my walk in Marlay Park, Dundrum, to support the IMNDA and fundraise for them.

Please feel free to donate as much as you can, any amount helps to fund the IMNDA nursing service, extra home care hours and critical equipment that's needed to keep people at home. But also, feel free to join any of the walks organized  across the country and show your support, sending a powerful message of hope to every family affected by MND. See a full list here: https://www.imnda.ie/event/walk-while-you-can/walk-locations.

Thanks a million, from me and from anyone impacted by MND.

Andrés

Andres, I heard a snippet of you and Jen on playback on RTE1 this morning and have been thinking about you both ever since. I'm really sad - sad that you're having to go through this, for Jen and your boys and your family in Argentina, sad that we lost touch, sad that I'm late to take part in the walk today. My being sad is of no use at all to anyone and is of little importance. I really hope the fundraising today exceeds all your expectations. Continue to stay as well and as positive as you are. And congratulations on your work as ambassador for MND. It's admirable, as it is so easy to just sit back and do nothing when faced with difficulty. Please send my love to Jen. I have funds memories of Cong and the lake with you both. And if your wedding day. You were such a happy, beautiful couple and so in love. And still are obviously! Roberto and I are still in Moycullen. Robin is 16 and Fionn is 12 and we were 25 years married this year. Not sure how that happened but it did. Roberto is gone off to a soccer match with Fionn but was pretty upset before he left and I know he'll try to contact you. Over the years we've wondered how you've both been but you know how life is - it just tends to get in the way. I'm rambling now so I'll stop. And just wanted to send you a massive virtual hug. You were always my favourite of Roberto's Argentinean friends in Ireland. Xxx
